Import and Export of Animals

Do you want to import animals to Bonaire or take your pet abroad? If so, you must comply with veterinary rules and requirements. The Bonaire Veterinary Department is here to assist you.

The rules for importing and exporting animals vary by animal species and by country. Therefore, please contact your veterinarian or the Bonaire Veterinary Department well in advance via email: vet.afdeling@bonairegov.com.

How do you apply for this?

Importing Animals

If you wish to import animals, please consult the BES Decree on the Import of Small Animals. You may also contact a veterinarian to inquire about Bonaire’s veterinary requirements. These depend, among other things, on the animal species and the country of origin.

To import a dog or cat from the Netherlands to Bonaire, the following are required:

  • A European pet passport;
  • A functioning microchip;
  • A valid rabies vaccination;
  • A health certificate signed by a veterinarian, issued no more than 10 days prior.

Exporting Animals

If you wish to take your pet abroad, you must comply with the laws and regulations of the destination country. Import requirements can vary significantly from country to country. To export pets, including dogs and cats, you should contact your veterinarian to obtain a veterinary certificate. Export requirements depend on the type of animal and the destination country.
