Driver’s License Card

You must apply for a driver’s license card in person at the Civil Affairs Department. Seven (7) business days after passing your road test, you can have your driver’s license card issued. The card is ready while you wait.

What does this product or service mean?

A driver’s license proves that you are authorized to operate a motor vehicle. Each vehicle has its own license category. Your driver’s license card specifies the categories of vehicles you are authorized to operate.

A new driver’s license card is typically valid for 5 years.

If your driver’s license was not issued on Bonaire but was issued within the Kingdom, you may use that license on Bonaire as long as it is valid. If your driver’s license was issued outside the Kingdom, you must take a new driving exam, or you may be able to exchange your foreign driver’s license. Check with the Public Entity’s Driver’s License Office to find out what your options are.

  • You can apply for a driver’s license card at the Civil Affairs Department if:
  • you have passed a driver’s license exam for the first time;
  • you have passed an exam for a new category;
  • your driver’s license is about to expire (if your driver’s license from another country in the Kingdom has expired, you must renew it in that country);
  • your driving privileges have been restricted (for example, due to an accident or illness);
  • your driver’s license has been lost or stolen;
  • your driver’s license is damaged.

How do you apply for this?

Here’s how to apply for a driver’s license:

  • Make an appointment online with the Civil Affairs Department.
  • Bring the following with you:
    • your valid ID
    • your old driver’s license, if you want to renew or replace it
    • a medical certificate issued within the last 2 months. You can request the medical certificate from your primary care physician.
  • You pay for your driver’s license at the time of application. Please pay by debit card.

Has your driver’s license been lost or stolen? Report this to the Civil Affairs Department and then apply for a new driver’s license. If you suspect misuse, we advise you to file a report with the police.

How long does it take?

Seven business days after passing your driving test, you can have your new driver’s license issued at the Civil Affairs Department. The driver’s license will be issued while you wait.
