Hygiene Rules

Good hygiene is important for the health of everyone on Bonaire. By following proper hygiene rules, you can help prevent the spread of disease. These rules apply to residents, businesses, and organizations.

If you notice an unsanitary situation, please report it to the Supervision and Enforcement Directorate.

What does this product or service mean?

Hygiene is everything you do to avoid getting sick. Hygiene rules help prevent infectious diseases. It is important that everyone follows these rules.

Hygiene rules are important in various places, such as at home, at work, at school, and in businesses.

There are five key areas of hygiene.

1. Personal hygiene
Personal hygiene starts with washing your hands thoroughly. Take your time doing this. Use soap and dry your hands with paper towels, which you should then throw away. Avoid using a towel that is shared by multiple people.

2. Hygiene of spaces and materials
Spaces and materials must be clean. Think of doors, restrooms, tables, and kitchen items such as knives and cutting boards. These must be thoroughly cleaned and, in some cases, disinfected. Spaces with tile on the floor and walls are often easier to keep clean.

3. Food hygiene
Hygiene is also important when it comes to food and drink. This applies, for example, to restaurants, schools, and childcare centers. It is important that food be transported cleanly, for example in clean plastic containers. Upon receipt, the food must be inspected. Afterward, the food must be thoroughly washed, portioned, and refrigerated.

4. Hygiene in Businesses and Hospitals
Businesses and hospitals often have particularly strict rules. This is the case, for example, at a hospital like Fundashon Mariadal. In areas such as operating rooms, staff must work with the utmost cleanliness and care.

5. Public hygiene
Public hygiene refers to hygiene in the local community. Think of trash, dirty trash bins, wastewater, an overflowing cesspool, or pests such as rats near the harbor. These situations can pose a health risk.

There is also a group of people who are particularly vulnerable to disease. We call this the YOPI group: Young, Old, Pregnant, and Infant. This includes young people, the elderly, pregnant women, and infants. It is important to pay extra attention to hygiene for this group.

Every resident can help. You can also remind your family, friends, and neighbors of the importance of hygiene.
