You may transport a deceased person from abroad to Bonaire. You may also transport a deceased person from Bonaire to another country. You will need several documents to do so. Upon arrival in Bonaire, you must present these documents to customs.
When can you apply for this?
The requirements for transporting human remains are:
- You must have the following documents in your possession:
- the death certificate
- a certificate issued by the competent authority
- You must transport the body in a watertight casket.
How do you apply for this?
Did the person die abroad? If so, you should contact the local authorities in the country where the death occurred, such as the town hall. If necessary, the Dutch embassy or consulate can assist you with this.
Here’s how to apply for the death certificate and permission for burial or cremation on Bonaire:
- Contact the funeral director in the country of origin.
How long does it take?
You may not bury or cremate the deceased on Bonaire later than 6 business days after death. If this is not possible because the deceased will be leaving Bonaire on or after these 6 business days?
Please contact the Civil Affairs Department of the Public Entity of Bonaire, as the Lieutenant Governor must then grant exemptions for the postponement and for transportation (see forms).
