Wob Request

Would you like to request information from the government? If so, you can submit a Wob request. With a Wob request, you are asking for information to be made public.

What does this product or service mean?

What should you pay attention to?

Make sure your Wob request is clear and precisely describes the information you wish to receive. Specify as concretely as possible which documents or topics are involved. If the request is too general or too vague, it may be rejected.

A Wob request is a request for information from a government agency.
Wob stands for: Government Information (Public Access) Act.

With a Wob request, you can request information about:

  • government policy
  • the preparation of decisions
  • the implementation of policy

You do not need to state why you want the information.

Anyone may submit a Wob request.

When can you apply for this?

Your Wob request must meet the following conditions:

  • the request concerns a matter within the government’s purview
  • the information already exists
  • the government possesses this information
  • your request is clear and not too general

A Wob request may be denied if:

  • security is at risk
  • it involves business information
  • it involves personal data

The government agency sometimes weighs transparency against

How do you apply for this?

Here’s how to submit a Wob request:

  1. Clearly state what information you want
  2. Send your request to the appropriate government agency
  3. Indicate how you’d like to receive the information
  • by email
  • as a copy
  • as an explanation

The government agency will make a decision and send you a response.

How long does it take?

The government agency will make a decision within 4 weeks.
This time limit may be extended once by 4 weeks.
This is called a “postponement under the Wob.”

If a Wob request is extended, you will be notified in writing.

The notification will explain why more time is needed.
If the government agency still does not respond within the second deadline, the government is considered late.

In that case, you can:

  • file an objection because the government did not make a decision on time
  • ask the government to make a decision after all

A lack of response does not automatically mean your request has been approved.
You must take action yourself.

Do you disagree with the decision?

If you disagree with the decision, you can file an objection.
If the government agency does not respond on time, you can file an appeal immediately.
