Purpose of this campaign
Alcohol Use Among Youth on Bonaire
Alcohol use among youth is also prevalent on Bonaire. The Global School-based Health Survey (2023) shows that:
- about one-third of youth have consumed alcohol in the past month;
- 15% of young people aged 12 or younger have consumed alcohol;
- about 60% of young people up to age 17 have ever consumed alcohol;
- about 20% of young people have ever been drunk.
Young people report that they often buy alcohol themselves in stores or obtain it through family members and acquaintances.
Why no alcohol for those under 18?
Young people’s brains are still developing rapidly. The brain isn’t fully developed until around age 25. Alcohol can interfere with normal development.
If young people drink alcohol frequently and in large quantities, their brains can be damaged. This can, for example, affect their ability to concentrate and their performance in school or at work.
Alcohol consumption can also affect the growth of other organs in young people. The liver, in particular—which breaks down most of the alcohol—can sustain damage.
Everyone has a role to play
Young people can play a role themselves by making informed choices and talking to others about alcohol. But Nothing Nada Nix18 isn’t just focused on them.
Parents, family members, schools, organizations, and other adults also have an important role to play. By setting a good example and talking to young people about alcohol, adults can support them in making healthy choices.
Under 18? Nothing. Nada. Nix.
By not drinking alcohol before the age of 18, young people have the best chance of growing up healthy and developing properly.
That is why GGD Bonaire / Salubridat Públiko recommends: no alcohol under the age of 18. Even after that, the rule remains: the less alcohol, the better for your health.
Together, the Same Message
Nothing Nada Nix18 is the Caribbean adaptation of the NIX18 campaign. The campaign was developed with input from the region and is being rolled out on Bonaire, St. Eustatius, Saba, Aruba, Curaçao, and St. Maarten.
