Combating Infectious Diseases
Bacteria and viruses are all around us. Some of them make us sick. We call this an infectious disease. Public Health Bonaire helps prevent and control infectious diseases, such as dengue, COVID-19, or measles. Public Health Bonaire advises residents, general practitioners, healthcare institutions, schools, daycare centers, and the Executive Council.
Vaccinations (for travel)
Do you want to travel safely? Public Health Bonaire offers advice on the health risks in the country you’re visiting and helps you get the right vaccinations. Did you know, for example, that vaccination against yellow fever is mandatory for travelers who have been in a high-risk area, such as Colombia or Brazil, within 7 days prior to arrival on Bonaire? In addition, Public Health Bonaire offers vaccinations to people in certain professions and vaccinations that are administered during the same period each year (flu vaccine and COVID-19 vaccine).
Healthy Living Environment (Ambiente Salú)
Public Health Bonaire works to create a healthy environment for the residents of Bonaire. This may involve, for example, improving air, soil, and water quality or reducing noise pollution.
Health Promotion (Promoshon di Salú)
Public Health Bonaire works to promote a healthy lifestyle, both physically and mentally. This may involve preventing obesity, promoting healthy eating, or encouraging physical activity. Public Health Bonaire also focuses on improving mental health and sexual health, as well as preventing addiction and substance use.
Policy & Research
Public Health Bonaire assists in developing health policies for the region. They monitor the prevalence of health issues on the island and use that information to formulate recommendations (policies) that take the population’s needs into account. In doing so, they collaborate with other organizations to improve health.
Crisis Coordination
Public Health Bonaire is responsible for bringing together all organizations involved in health and care during times of crisis, coordinating their efforts, and jointly addressing the crisis. During a crisis, Public Health Bonaire also provides advice at the administrative level on how to manage the crisis in the interest of public health.
